    Pros +

    • Peaceful, calm, quiet and authentic Japanese Onsen experience. Have two kinds of Hot springs and variety of three onsens, nice and artistic. Reasonable schedule alternate between for Man and Woman use, with 10 minutes of cleaning in between. Staffs are showing hospitality so guests felt welcomed. Delicious and artistically prepared meal in variety and nutritious, right as the scheduled time for each group of guests. Glad that one of the waitresses spoke fluent English so make the communication smooth. Hotel is very clean. All guests’ shoes were collected and changed right at the entrance. Love their Yukata, so beautifully designed. Has inner and outer jacket in blue. Picking up service provided between Gora station and hotel. Location is conveniently one stop from Open air museum which we planned to go next day.
    • If you want to experience the real Japan, then this is the place. Walking around in classic kimono, the most colourful food you had seen in your life. Amazing onsen for you to relax into at the end of a long day, this place is just amazing, we loved it here and would love to come back. The location to the cable car is fantastic and the main train that goes up and down the hill all great. The staff are amazing, speaking english and just so helpful. What a place to stay.
    • Great breakfast and dinner, very friendly staff

    Cons -

    • Check in pick up time when arriving stopped at 5:30 pm. We were traveling from Tokyo and many transfers in between. So we’re late (arriving at 6:30) so have to take Taxi (700 Y). Location, if aim to start next day tour from open air museum in Gora, is okay and convenient, only 6 minutes drive away from Gora station. But from Hakone Yumato to Gora is still another 45-minutes Tazen train, so when traveling from Tokyo, seems a little too far.
    • Be aware this place is on a mountain \ hill, even though the walks can be short the climb or walk down is not the easiest, we are quite fit, but could imagine that someone elderly or not as able as us may struggle, so get a taxi if you need as this place is great.Strangely, the whole area seems to close down around 8PM, so there is very little to do around here, so just plan an evening relaxing at the hotel.Nit picking, the hotel could do with a bit of paint here and there to spruce up a bit.
    • Onsen is not as big as on the pictures

Staff is super friendly! Food - breakfast and dinner were exceptional traditional Japanese cousine. Location is very convenient with bus stopping next to door and funiculars 5-10 minutes walking distance.

    10RobertPosted on: 11-27-2025

Excellent Japanese breakfast and gourmet dinners were highlights, along with the onsen bath and accommodating staff. Location was great, a short walk to the top cable car stop (Sounzan) and the beginning of the ropeway to Lake Ashi. There is also a bus stop very close to the driveway. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable.

    All was good!

Small and intimate , personalized service. Friendly. They also offer a shuttle from the place.

Walking from the station to the place was a bit of a challenge with luggage as very hilly, and goggle maps wasn’t accurate

    9DavidPosted on: 11-3-2025

The included Kaiseki was delicious with a large variety at every meal, and at different meals.

I really enjoyed my stay at this traditional Japanese hotel. The building shows its age in a charming, traditional way, but everything is very clean and well maintained, it has that charming old-fashioned vibe that makes the experience unique. The staff are incredibly kind and helpful, always going the extra mile to make guests feel welcome. The onsen was spotless and very easy to access. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a traditional Japanese style, delicious and beautifully presented. I had a lot of fun eating and learning from the staff about the dishes.Honestly, I could be picky and find small things to point out, but I truly had a pleasant stay and nothing to complain about. It’s great value for the money.Tip: Use the hotel’s shuttle service to get there and back, it’s very convenient.Overall, a super pleasant experience, kind people, good food, and a wonderful atmosphere.

The meals were outstanding, staff very friendly and helpful

No Japanese style tatame in the room

The meals at Hakone Gora Onsen are delicious. The dinner and breakfast service give a feeling of being cared for, and treated kindly. Staff at this hotel are very kind, helpful, and give useful advice. My luggage was delivered by sagawa and it was handled respectfully and conveniently. Some reviews talk about the rooms themselves being dated, but I think it makes it home-y! I would love to return one day.

I recieved an in room massage and the therapist was a little rougher than I'm used to. It just didnt come across when I tried to let her know, so I dont blame her.

    7WendyPosted on: 9-9-2025

The hotel offers free shuttle from 2 stations which was very appreciated due to the location. There aren’t anything around so 2 traditional japanese meals are offered but we had different taste and thus ended up eating elsewhere. Room is very big, friendly staff but not 24h reception

The hotel was a little old and the room smelled like humidity. 30min walk to the train station and uphill so do not recommend walking and take a taxi.

Food, onsen, spacious room, close to Sounzan cablecar station

A bit outdated interior in the room

Wonderful food, spacious room with beautiful views, polite and friendly staff

All good - exceeded our expectations

Onsen, big room and bfast/dinner experience ?

Card payment not allowed for massage

The staff was very kind.Pick up service from Gora station to the hotel. The dinner on the second day,AC.

The water in the hot spring was cloudy and dirty, and the ceiling and the floor of the public bathroom were filled with mold. The staff said that they never cleaned the hot bath. The food was too salty. My room smelled like fish.Sharing the slippers was not sanitary.

The meals were incredible! We were blown away our first night. We looked forward to every meal for the duration of our stay. The staff were extremely attentive and gracious, the owner even shuttled us to the station personally. The rooms themselves were spacious and comfortable. I especially loved the big windows. The baths were a little on the smaller side, but gorgeous/relaxing nonetheless. Great value for your money and the highlight of our trip thus far!

The location is a little out of the main drag

    9ClairePosted on: 6-20-2025

This was a small ryokan which allowed exposure to traditional Japan. The room size is very large by Japanese standards. We loved using the Onsen but would have liked to be able to book a time to use onsen as a couple together.

We enjoyed the included dinner and breakfast but as we are unfamiliar with the traditions, would have liked a photo map to read telling us what things are, and also how they should be combined/eaten, and if an order to eat things is expected. We enjoyed the experience though.

    10DanielPosted on: 6-7-2025

Was place in an upgraded, very spacious room. Staff were very warm and friendly, especially the hotel manager. The onsen onsite was well maintained and easy to try for first timers. At the time we stayed (May 2025) tattoos were allowed in the onsen. The stay included breakfast and dinner in teishoku style. It was interesting to try all the different small plates that represent Japanese culture. Mostly fish and soy based, it may not appeal to some, but it was a great experience nonetheless. The location is excellent to start the “Hakone Loop”. Souzan Station is the start of the ropeway, at the top of the cable car so you will have already completed the cable car portion of the loop going counter clockwise. Highly recommended, the manager is very friendly and will ensure you will have a pleasant stay. Wouldn’t hesitate to book again if we go back to the Hakone area (as a couple, I don’t believe this hotel is intended for families with children).

Loved the onsen and how clean everything was

Not any restaurants nearby but you get dinner and breakfast included

Comfortable clean room. Easy access to ropeway tram...just a few minute walk. Nice hot springs baths. Included dinner and breakfast we're Japanese style with a variety of interesting foods.

Way up the hill from Gora town, not much nearby.
